Education News: Special needs - Expectations lower in themainstream

Teachers in mainstream schools may have lower expectations of pupils with special needs than those in special schools, putting those children at a disadvantage.

A University of Strathclyde study found mainstream teachers felt specialneeds pupils were unlikely to make much academic progress, while specialneeds teachers were more optimistic.

Lisa Woolfson, senior lecturer in educational psychology at theuniversity, said that it was important to tackle teachers' beliefs. "Itis likely that special needs teachers who are trained to deal withchildren with learning difficulties have a better idea of how much theycan achieve and are more positive about the possibilities," shesaid.

But a spokeswoman for the Scottish Executive said that teachers withhigh expectations could be found in both mainstream and specialistschools.
