A number of MPs have privately told ministers that they will onlysupport the Government's education white paper if there are strict newrules on school admissions.
They want to see schools being forced to comply with the code ofpractice rather than the current arrangement where schools are merelyrequired to "have regard" to it. They have also suggested that theschools adjudicator should be given greater powers, including orderingschools to give priority to looked-after children.
If the Prime Minister refuses to bow to their demands, the MPs plan totry and force an amendment to the Schools Bill that will follow on fromthe white paper in the New Year.
