In his annual report, Dr Philip Hunter said his office had handled 227cases in the past year, including 139 complaints about schools usingdubious selection policies. Of these, 104 were upheld or partiallyupheld.
The report is an embarrassment for the Government since it hasrepeatedly claimed that the admissions code is an effective tool forachieving fair admissions.
Chris Waterman, director of ConfEd, said: "This confirms anecdotalevidence that schools are using covert selection."
