A report by Chris Waterman, executive director of ConfEd, the body thatrepresents directors of children's services, calls on ministers toensure schools do not ignore the code of practice on admissions.
The report, issued last week, states: "If school admissions are to makea significant contribution to a more just society, the single mostimportant change is to amend the law to place a statutory duty on alladmission authorities to follow the code."
The Government is consulting on "updates" to the code of practice foradmissions. Children's services directors have previously expressedconcern that the Every Child Matters reforms are being damaged by movesto give schools greater freedom over admissions.
