Education News: Admissions - Draft code comes out under duress

The Government has published a new draft code of practice on school admissions after months of heavy pressure from campaigners in the children's sector.

The published code reflects a draft version circulated to MPsscrutinising the Education Bill (Children Now, 10-17 May). As expected,it bans schools from interviewing parents and increasing the cost ofschool uniforms.

The code also includes guidelines on children who are hard to place, including those with special educational needs. It says schools must notgive lower priority in admissions to children with special educationalneeds statements or to children with medical needs but no statement.Meanwhile, looked-after children will be given priority in theadmissions process.

The Government has said that schools will have to "act in accordance"with the code not just "have regard to it" (Children Now, 15-22February).
