Education News: Education Bill - Ban on covert selection iswelcomed

1 min read
Campaigners for fairer school admissions have given an enthusiastic welcome to a new code of practice unveiled by ministers last week.

The revised code was circulated to MPs scrutinising the EducationBill.

It will be put out for consultation later this year.

As expected, it bans oversubscribed schools from using overt methods ofselection such as interviews with parents. But it also outlaws coverttactics such as driving up the cost of school uniforms and requestingvoluntary contributions to school funds.

On school uniforms, it says: "Governing bodies can help limit theexpense of uniforms by ensuring that the uniform chosen is widelyavailable in high street shops or on the internet rather than from anexpensive sole supplier. Children on free school meals would not have topay."

On contributions, it says: "It is poor practice for schools to refer todonations and voluntary contributions in their prospectus and in otherdocuments."
