Education News: Education White Paper - Admissions code climbdown welcomed

Children's professionals have warmed to the education white paper after ministers finally agreed to strengthen the schools admissions code.

The long-running admissions battle appeared to have been won aftereducation secretary Ruth Kelly pledged that schools would have to "actin accordance" with the code rather than needing to "have regard" toit.

Bob Garnett, the president of the children's service managers'association Confed, said: "There's no point having a code if you cantake it or leave it. The Government has recognised that and we welcomethat. We await the the Bill's publication with interest."

The Local Government Association agreed the Government had made stepsforward on admissions. Conservative councillor Alison King, chair of theassociation's children and young people board, said: "Strengtheningadmissions procedures will make sure pupils can choose schools ratherthan the other way round."
