Liz Railton said she had evidence that poorer parents are not gettingaccess to the best state secondaries.
She added that four per cent of parents in Essex had not even enteredthe admissions process last year. "That is 655 parents who did notparticipate in the process of choosing a school for their child," shesaid.
"We need to work much, much harder at helping parents to use the currentsystem."
But Chris Waterman, executive director of ConfEd, said that a moreradical approach was needed to stop rogue schools covertly selectingmiddle class children.
