This is the main finding of research carried out by the NationalFoundation for Educational Research that compared the school admissionspolicy in England with that of Sweden, the Netherlands and NewZealand.
The Review of International Literature on Admissions found thatincreased parental choice can result in greater competition within theeducational market which, in turn, can drive up standards. However, thereport states: "Socio-economic status can affect not only the capacityof parents and children to make informed choice but also shape what theyregard as 'valuable' and worth choosing. Combined with other factors, the result is an uneven distribution of pupils of differentcharacteristics."
The findings come in advance of the implementation of the revised schooladmissions code, which comes into force on 28 February.
