Education News: Legislation - Latest Acts to have impact on schools

1 min read
Two Government Bills with significant implications for schools have received Royal assent.

The Education Act contains plans for schools to have three-year ringfenced budgets which have been strongly opposed by children's charities and councils.

The Disability Discrimination Act is intended to ensure that schools are fully signed up to promoting disability equality.

Both Acts were conceived this week after the Government sought to push as many Bills as possible through Parliament before its dissolution for the election.

The Education Act's most controversial element is its provisions for ringfenced budgets, which campaigners claim could damage links between schools and other public services and jeopardise joined-up working.

The Government has seen off opposition to the plans but it has bowed to pressure from the same campaigners and vowed to make it harder for schools to switch to foundation status.
