Primary schools are lagging behind secondary schools when it comes to delivering extended services, new figures reveal.

Only 13 per cent of primary schools are providing access to the coreoffer compared with 21 per cent of secondaries. Children's ministerBeverley Hughes revealed the figures last week in response to aParliamentary question tabled by the Liberal Democrat educationspokeswoman Sarah Teather.

Teather wanted to know the number of primary and secondary schools inEngland operating "extended hours from 8am to 6pm, five days a weeksince the beginning of the autumn term".

The children's minister responded with a written answer.

It said: "There were 2,237 primary schools and 708 secondary schoolsdelivering the extended schools core offer of activities at thebeginning of the autumn term.

"What the provision looks like in practice will vary according to theneeds of each community, based on consultation. Some schools may nothave identified a local need for services from 8am to 6pm and may bemeeting the needs of parents and children through activities orchildcare with different opening hours."
