Education News: Wales - Work with special schools is needed

Mainstream schools in Wales should work more closely with special schools to develop the curriculum and joint working, a report from Welsh education watchdog Estyn has recommended.

The report, The Disability Discrimination Act (1995): The practice ofschools and local education authorities in implementing their duties, looked at how well education authorities are implementing the Act.

Chief inspector Susan Lewis said: "Few local authorities have developedeffective partnerships between mainstream schools and special schools tosupport and develop the curriculum and teaching."

The report also found that a lack of flexible specialist transport isone of the main barriers to disabled pupils attending out-of-schoolactivities like breakfast and after-school clubs.
