From September, the National Professional Qualification for Headship will include a new module on the leadership of extended schools.
The National College for School Leadership, which runs the course, has introduced the module following concerns from teaching unions that there is not enough training available for head teachers of extended schools.
Maggie Farrar, head of the college's community leadership strategy, said: "As all schools will become extended by 2008 this will increasingly become an important module."
She said it would tackle the range of issues that extended schools heads are currently encountering.
"It will look at the leadership dimension of extended schools. It will look at things like building partnerships with the community, and involving parents. In fact, it will look at all of the issues around extending the school day, and issues of governance."
