The concept of extended schools seems to have wide support among teaching unions, but, as usual, the finer details of their dev-elopment are causing concern.
Amid worries that head teachers might not be able to focus on teaching standards if they are under pressure to manage other services in the community, the unions have called for proper leadership training (Education News, 26 May-1 June).
David Hart, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, believes heads would be able to fill the role of chief executive of extended schools "more than adequately", but only if sufficient staff and resources were made available to them in both education and community services.
