Extended schools leadership: New Leaders for New Schools

As extended schools play an ever greater role in their communities, they are placing new pressures on heads and managers. David Singleton looks at what is being done to develop their skills and leadership.

When Janet Neale agreed to take on a new job as a community learning officer at Warwickshire Council she had no idea what she was letting herself in for. "I started with a blank piece of paper," she recalls. "I'd worked for the education department forever, in different guises, but as this was a new role I had nobody to follow."

That was back in October 2003. Now the role is much clearer and Neale spends most of her time forging links between the county's extended schools and other parts of the community, such as Connexions, further education colleges, primary care trusts and voluntary sector organisations.
