EDUCATION NEWS: Environment - Sheffield primary school goes green

Pupils in a newly opened Sheffield school have been getting used to waterless urinals and eating fruit instead of chocolate this week, as part of a drive to tackle childhood obesity and put environmental and health issues at the heart of the school.

Norfolk Primary School's purpose-built facility has a turf roof to improve humidity around the building and support wildlife.

Natural materials are used throughout the school to provide a safe environment for people with asthma and allergies.

Rainwater is collected for flushing lavatories and waterless urinals have been installed.

Health policies include having fresh water available all day in the classrooms.

No fizzy drinks are allowed and the tuckshop sells fruit and cereals rather than sweets and chocolates.
