Joe Harvey, the director of the Health Education Trust, said: "You can't say to parents 'we're banning fizzy drinks from lunchboxes' and then sell them from a vending machine or over the counter." He was speaking after schools minister Jacqui Smith backed a new report that calls on schools to set guidelines on the content of lunchboxes, following consultation with parents.
The report, by the National Governors Council, says: "It is a common misconception that packed lunches brought from home provide a healthier choice than a school meal." It suggests that instead of packing food which contains high levels of fat, sugar and salt, children should take in a sliced beef roll with cucumber and lettuce, a low-fat fruit yoghurt, a pear, and a bottle of flavoured sparkling water.
