Health News: Healthy Eating - Families support junk food advert ban

1 min read
Parents and teenagers from low- income families joined doctors last week in supporting a ban on the advertising of unhealthy food aimed at children.

Research from the Food Standards Agency found parents from low-income families think the most effective way to get their children to eat more healthily is to reduce advertising targeted at children and to cut fat, salt and sugar in food aimed at children.

Teenagers strongly support including healthier options in vending machines, though parents felt they it would have a more limited impact. Families also showed inconsistent views towards labelling products to indicate to children that they were high in salt, fat or sugar.

The news was welcomed by the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association, which is pushing for greater consultation to be conducted with children to combat child obesity.
