In the late 1990s, teachers and pupils at Cassop Primary School inCounty Durham grew increasingly concerned about climate change and beganto think of ways to make the school as environmentally friendly andcarbon neutral as possible.
In 1999 a wind turbine was installed in the school field in a jointproject with Durham County Council and Northern Electric. Although windfarms have proved controversial in the UK, a consultation exercisecarried out by pupils in the two former coal-mining villages the schoolserves found that nine out of 10 local people supported theinstallation.
The turbine now produces 50,000KW per year, saving around 122 tonnes ofcarbon dioxide and meeting a third of the school's electricityneeds.
