What is it? Durham Johnston School is a new secondary school, which has been built through the government's multi-billion-pound Building Schools for the Future programme.

The main school building has been completed at a cost of £23.8m. Work to improve the outdoors areas is planned over the next couple of months.

When does it open? The first pupils start school at Durham Johnston this month. Further pupils will join the school in September, by which time work on outdoors sport and play areas will be finished.

What is special about the school? All the school's new classrooms are fitted out with state-of-the-art IT equipment. The building has been designed around a large open plan space in the middle and students will benefit from outdoor performance and teaching areas. There are also cafes and sports and fitness facilities on site.
