Education News: Pupil Strike - School won't crack down on protesters

A Swindon school does not plan to take action against pupils who walked out of lessons in support of a disgruntled teacher.

Malcolm Walker had written a letter to pupils at Headlands school outlining problems he had with the school's management.

More than 100 pupils walked out of lessons on 17 May and around 40 refused to return, prompting staff to close the school. It returned to normal working last Thursday (20 May).

Swindon council said the pupils involved would not face disciplinary action, but it refused to say what action was to be taken against the teacher.

The school was placed in special measures in October 2002, and the LEA said it recognised that improvements were needed.

It said it had taken "decisive action" such as committing to an initiative called Fresh Start that begins in September.
