44.6% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals (13.9 per cent in England)

27% of looked-after children in year 11 in full-time education in 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

44% of boys achieved Level 5 or above at key stage 3 English (62 per cent in England)

66% of girls achieved Level 5 or above at key stage 3 English in 2002/3 (76 per cent in England)

A spokeswoman for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets said: "Performance tables show 74 per cent of children at or above Level 4 in English and 71 per cent in Maths. Secondary school top results are rising faster than anywhere in Britain. The key has been an absolute belief from school communities and the LEA that pupils can overcome social challenges to achieve their very best."
