Education News: Education Stats - Stoke-on-Trent

24.3% of nursery and primary school pupils took free school meals in January 2003 (13.9 per cent in England)

37% of year 11 looked-after children in full-time education in September 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

54% of boys achieved level 5 at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (62 per cent in England)

70% of girls achieved level 5 at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (76 per cent in England)

A city council spokesman said: "Performance tables show 68 per cent of children at or above Level 4 in English and 66 per cent at or above in maths. There's a way to go to hit the national average, but many schools are achieving near, or above, expectations."
