54% of boys achieved level 5 at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (62 per cent in England)
70% of girls achieved level 5 at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (76 per cent in England)
A city council spokesman said: "Performance tables show 68 per cent of children at or above Level 4 in English and 66 per cent at or above in maths. There's a way to go to hit the national average, but many schools are achieving near, or above, expectations."
