17.7% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2003 (13.9 per cent in England)

- 1.18% of half days missed from secondary schools due to unauthorised absences, 2002/3 (1.07 per cent in England)

- 77% of looked-after children in year 11 in full-time education in 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

- 52% of boys achieved Level 5 or above at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (62 per cent in England)

A spokesman for Southampton City Council said the authority achieved its best GCSE results last summer: 45 per cent of pupils had five good passes. Its strategy includes every school in a learning cluster, and in Sure Start projects there is successful multi-agency practice. "We still want to raise standards and improve attendance and staying-on," he said.
