24.8% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2003 (13.9 per cent in England)

- 19.7% of special educational needs pupils without statements in January 2003 (15.9 per cent in England)

- 2.37% of half days missed due to unauthorised absence in secondary schools in 2002/03 (1.07 per cent in England)

- 48% of looked-after children in full-time education in September 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

A spokesman for Nottingham City Council said this year's GCSE results showed schools were continuing to make good, solid progress.

"Since 2000, the number of our pupils getting the top grades has increased by more than nine per cent. What is particularly pleasing is that the improvements we have seen have been at a wide range of schools."
