22.1% of nursery and primary pupils taking free school meals in January 2003 (13.9 per cent in England)

75% of pupils achieved Level 5 or above at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (69 per cent in England)

60% of Year 11 looked-after children in full-time education in 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

0.07% of primary pupils permanently excluded from school in 2002/3 (0.03 per cent in England)

During 2003/4 the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral established a Key Stage 1 behaviour project to support a number of children with significant social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. School attendance improved, as did Key Stage 3 and GCSE achievements. The authority also gained beacon council status for transforming secondary education.
