26.1% of pupils taking free school meals in January 2003 (13.9 per cent in England)

- 44% of looked-after children in Year 11 in full-time education in September 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

- 2.84% of half days missed from secondary schools due to unauthorised absences in 2002/3 (1.07 per cent in England)

- 54% of pupils achieved Level 5 or above at Key Stage 3 English in 2002/3 (69 per cent in England)

Steve Munby, Knowsley's director of education and lifelong learning, said: "We have been making huge improvements in education for years. The percentage of pupils taking free school meals is almost twice the national average and reflects the fact that Knowsley is now the most deprived borough in the UK."
