EDUCATION NEWS: School transition - Eastbank to extend pupil support trial

A Glasgow school plans to extend a scheme that gives support to pupils struggling to cope academically with the transition from primary to secondary education.

Eastbank Academy in the city's East End has been piloting its "Enable" scheme for the past 18 months for Glasgow City Council. It uses two teachers trained for primary education to offer a bridge into secondary education for pupils struggling with literacy and numeracy skills.

The scheme currently covers pupils in S1 and S2 but head teacher Jim Dalziel wants to extend it into S3. "Many of the kids will continue to require a bit of extra support as they go through school," said Dalziel.

Scottish first minister Jack McConnell has also said that he wants to introduce more flexibility between primary and secondary education in a bid to stop pupils losing their momentum when they move to secondary schools.
