63% of children with new statements of special educational needs in 2002 were placed in mainstream schools (68.6 per cent in England)

14.1% of primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2004 (14.2 per cent in England)

1.34% of half days missed by secondary school pupils due to unauthorised absences in 2002/03 (1.07 per cent in England)

73% of pupils achieved Level 4 or above at Key Stage 2 maths in 2003/04 (74 per cent in England)

Paul Greenhalgh, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's assistant director for inclusion, special educational needs and entitlement, said: "We are building four additional learning resource bases to enable more pupils with statements to have better access to the opportunities of mainstream schools."
