0.98% of half days missed owing to unauthorised absence in 2005/06 (0.78 per cent in England)

- 7.5% of primary pupils did not have English as their first language inJanuary 2006 (12.5 per cent in England)

- 2.8% of pupils with special educational needs statements in January2006 (2.9 per cent in England)

- 13.4% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals inJanuary 2006 (13.3 per cent in England)

Southend-on-Sea's annual performance assessment report states: "Progresshas been made in reducing authorised absences in primary schools, butunauthorised absences in secondary schools is above the national averageand those of similar councils. Action is being taken to tacklepersistent truants."
