83% of 16- and 17-year-old care leavers with English and maths at Scottish Qualifications Framework 3 in 2002/03 (27 per cent in Scotland)

2 per 1,000 primary school pupils excluded from school (10 per 1,000 in Scotland)

64.6% of Primary 2 pupils achieved Level A or above in 2002/03 (51.9 per cent in Scotland)

18.6% of pupils entitled to free school meals in 2002/03 (18.8 per cent in Scotland)

Leslie Manson, Orkney's director of education and recreation service, said: "Orkney's education service places enormous importance on supporting pupils at risk of failure. Excellent staffing levels mean that support can be targeted at pupils with additional needs. The highest attainment for all is one of our central aims. We believe this is achieved through good teaching, and motivating pupils to develop as wide a range of talents and interests as possible."
