316 per 1,000 special school pupils excluded in 2002/03 (173 per 1,000 in Scotland)

44% of 16- and 17-year-old care leavers with English and maths at Scottish Qualifications Framework 3 in 2002/03 (27 per cent in Scotland)

15.2% of pupils entitled to free school meals in 2002/03 (18.8 per cent in Scotland)

43.2% of Primary 2 pupils achieved Level A or above in 2002/03 (51.9 per cent in Scotland)

Councillor Peter Boyes, Midlothian Council cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, said: "The council is working hard in the area of achievement, to improve arrangements for more integrated working for pupils with extra support needs.

"For instance, the cashless catering system, operated through the Dialogue Youth initiative, is raising the uptake of free school meals."
