22.2% of pupils taking free school meals in 2002/03 (18.8 per cent in Scotland)

92.9% of three-year-olds in pre-school in January 2003 (94.3 per cent in Scotland)

68 exclusions per 1,000 pupils in 2001/2002 (50 per 1,000 pupils in Scotland)

29% of school leavers entering full-time higher education in 2001/02 (32 per cent in Scotland)

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said its motto was "aiming higher" and that Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education recently praised it as "one of the best in Scotland". Examples of good education practice include piloting vocational education and relaxing the secondary curriculum to allow pupils to follow their interests and aptitudes. The council is also piloting several initiatives for pupils at risk of exclusion.
