EDUCATION NEWS: Education Stats - Essex

29% of looked-after year 11 pupils in full- or part-time training or employment in 2002 (20.6 per cent in England)

51% of looked-after year 11 pupils in full-time education in 2002 (55.6 per cent in England)

8.8% of pupils taking free school meals (13.9 per cent in England)

75% of girls achieved level 5 or above in key stage 3 maths (72 per cent in England)

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "We work closely with schools facing significant challenges. Standards in these areas are rising at a faster rate than nationally. The latest key stage 3 test results in English revealed boys narrowing the gap with girls by five per cent. Our corporate parenting, and leaving and after-care services work to raise the aspirations of pupils at GCSE level, a strong foundation for accessing opportunities."
