Designated Teachers for Looked-after Children: Draft Regulations and Statutory Guidance.

Education
The Children and Young Persons Act 2008 requires all maintained schools to designate a member of staff who is responsible for promoting the educational achievement of looked-after children or care leavers.

The government is seeking views on draft regulations that will set out the experience required of designated teachers for looked-after children, and is also consulting on guidance for maintained schools' governing bodies.

The draft regulations are underpinned by the white paper Care Matters: Time for Change in which the government committed to giving statutory footing to the role of designated teacher. The regulations were initially set out under section 20(3) of the Children and Young Persons Act 2008, and are expected to come into force on 1 September 2009.

Closing date: 20 May
