The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) was forced to withdraw data that showed around 200 children faced more than 10 placement moves in a year, with nine local authorities moving 10 or more children more than 10 times between April 2007 and March 2008.
After a question from shadow children's minister Tim Loughton, children's minister Beverley Hughes released the figures in the House of Commons last week. But, after being questioned by CYP Now, London borough Kensington and Chelsea informed the DCSF of the mistake.
A DCSF spokeswoman said: "The data has been found to contain errors. These were identified by officials checking figures for a local authority who queried high numbers in its entry. The error affects the figures for all authorities and we are working with our parliamentary section to correct them in Hansard."
