My volunteering journey started in an unusual way. I was five years old when my parents took me to Southend Carnival for the first time.

This parade along the coast of my local town was beautiful and, to my five-year-old self, it was breathtaking to see so many people nited together. The procession was led by three inspirational young women, the Carnival Queen and Court, role models for their community and at the forefront of a fundraising mission. I vowed that one day I would be like them and make a difference.

At the age of 15, I began my year-long reign as a Carnival Princess, and spent a year in the thick of a fundraising extravaganza, spending hours promoting worthy causes and raising thousands of pounds for charity. For me, volunteering wasn't about "giving up" my time - it was a way to do something productive and have fun, and it was a real honour to be involved.
