Councillors neglect children in care

1 min read Social Care
Councillors must be more aware of their responsibilities to looked-after children, the chair of the Local Government Association's (LGA) children and young people's board has said.

Councillor Les Lawrence was giving evidence to the Commons select committee for children, schools and families, when he said that some elected members had not got to grips with their duty to children in the care system.

"This not only applies to metropolitan areas but within the shire counties, because I don't think the district councils fully understand their role in this whole arena," he said. "They do have some responsibility under the positive activities heading and that message has not been fulfilled."

Lawrence added that the LGA had done a lot of work around the issue of training for elected members to highlight their role in children's lives and the responsibilities they have in protecting their rights.
