Voluntary sector best placed to give young people debt advice

1 min read Social Care
The voluntary sector is best placed to offer young people debt advice, the vice chair of the Local Government Association's (LGA) children and young people's board has said.

David Bellotti, who is also a councillor for Bath and North East Somerset, was speaking at Centrepoint and YWCA’s fringe meeting on young people and debt at the Liberal Democrat conference in Bournemouth on Monday.

Advice is best coming from the voluntary sector in a friendly, non judgemental way, he said. The work for local authorities is to ensure that the money is in place.

He added that while many councils were adopting flexible working to help staff, it made little difference to the young people who needed the council’s help and that a named person to deal with all young people’s financial queries would be an asset.
