The year-long project, called Up For It, A Chance To Shine, will includea 15,000 Challenge Fund jointly financed by the council and localprimary care trusts. The fund will seek applications from young peoplewho need a grant to help them develop a talent or hobby, such as playinga musical instrument. Grants of up to 1,000 will be awarded tosuccessful applicants.
The initiative will also feature a range of events including teaparties, take your looked-after child to work day, and a befriendingservice in which a child will take a friend out on a regular basis.
The project will target the 2,000 looked-after children in theBirmingham area. Children will be nominated to take part in the schemeby members of their "support network" such as teachers, foster parentsor children's home carers. It will also celebrate looked-afterchildren's achievements by awarding certificates and badges.
