When a member of the public feels a council is at fault, they can contact the Local Government Ombudsman to investigate the complaint.

What is the Local Government Ombudsman?

The Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) investigates complaints against councils and some other bodies, for instance, education admission appeal panels. It is an independent and free service.

Which matters can be the subject of investigation?

The LGO can investigate complaints concerning most council services, including social care, housing and most education matters (school admissions, transport, exclusions, student support, home tuition and some aspects of special educational needs). The LGO investigates complaints regarding maladministration. This is when a council is at fault because it has not delivered a service correctly, or has not followed the correct procedure when reaching a decision. For example, the council may be at fault if it takes too long to reach a decision, if it treats someone unfairly or if it provides incorrect information. In order to get help from the LGO, it is necessary to demonstrate that the complainant has been significantly affected by the fault of the council.
