Staffordshire County Council has agreed to reconsider a complaint from a care leaver about her treatment while in care after the local government and social care ombudsman (LGO) ruled statutory guidance was followed "too rigidly”.

The woman, now aged 25, entered care for a short time as a teenager in 2011, when she could no longer live with her parents, according to the LGO report.

She stayed with two sets of foster parents before moving back with her mother.

However, later she called on the council for help when she fell pregnant at 15 and her parents did not offer their support.

In late 2020, the woman complained to the council about the support she received while in its care, noting that she believed she had missed out on support she should have been entitled to as a formerly looked-after child with a baby, including a care leaver’s grant.
