Local Government Ombudsman: Complaints Champion

When children feel they have been given a raw deal by their local authority they can ask the Local Government Ombudsman to investigate their claim. Michele Kirsch finds out how the Ombudsman can help.

When 14-year-old Lea(i) was branded "a difficult teenager" by socialservices after she complained of physical abuse by her father in 2001'she embarked on a painful and bureaucratic journey that highlighted aserious lack of joined-up thinking by her local authority.

For a start, after the initial complaint, no one interviewed her father,though she had been to her GP many times with injuries. Months later,when Lea went to social services again to tell them she had been thrownout of the family home, the social worker did not look up Lea's recordsto get a fuller picture and told her they could not find heraccommodation unless she was at risk.
