Ombudsman slams council for education transport blunders

Stockton-on-Tees Council has been criticised by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGO) for failures around delivering free education transport to vulnerable young people.

LGO Paul Najsarek has raised the concerns after investigating a case where the local authority failed to arrange free transport to college for three years for a teenager who has an education, health and care plan (EHCP) in place.

The blunder left the teenager’s mother having to give up her job so that she could take her son to and from college at her own expense.

The ombudsman heard that a shared taxi arranged by the council for the teenager was no longer suitable due to his anxiety.

But the council “failed to properly consider the mother’s concerns or make suitable arrangements”, the LGO found.
