Children's centres: Heads get choice of qualification

First-time heads of children's centres will have a choice of leadership qualification following changes to the law.

Since April 2004 teachers have had to hold the National ProfessionalQualification for Headship in order to be appointed as a first-timeheadteacher of a maintained school.

However, from this month, heads of maintained nursery schools designatedor likely to become children's centres, will be exempt from thequalification providing they hold the National ProfessionalQualification in Integrated Centre Leadership or are working towards it.This has been specifically designed to meet the needs of leaders inearly years settings, including children's centres.
