It is proposing that they won't need to hold the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and instead will be able to work towards the new National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership, which will be rolled out in the autumn (Children Now, 4-10 May).
In a consultation launched last week, Chris Wells, divisional manager for children's workforce reform at the Department for Education and Skills, said the course might be a "more appropriate qualification" for managers of integrated children's centres.
Since 1 April 2004, first-time head teachers of maintained schools or non-maintained special schools have had to hold the NPQH or be working towards it. But from 1 April 2009, they will have to hold the qualification and it will no longer be sufficient to be working towards it. The consultation will run until 25 August.
