Children's centres: Qualification will set the standard

The first national leadership qualification for senior staff in children's centres should help even out national disparities in training and boost awareness of the breadth of expertise in the sector, according to its creators.

The National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership is being led by the National College for School Leadership in partnership with the Pen Green Leadership Development Centre in Corby, Northamptonshire.

The programme, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, will start this September as a 35-candidate pilot. Maggie Farrar, assistant director of the college and head of its community leadership strategy, said: "Generally the leadership needs of early years leaders have not been met to the same level across the country although there are some pockets of very good practice."

The course will focus on leaders of integrated children's centres and at least 400 people are expected to sign up when it is rolled out in 2005.
