Children's centres: First professional standards unveiled

The Government has unveiled the first set of professional standards for children's centre bosses.

The standards set out the skills expected of children's centre managersand will be used to assess those taking the National ProfessionalQualification in Integrated Centre Leadership.

The standards cover six areas: encouraging learning among staff andfamilies; understanding communities; accountability; planning ahead;building teams; and managing. The National College for School Leadershipand Pen Green Research developed the standards for the Department forEducation and Skills.

Maggie Farrar, operational director of Every Child Matters and standardsat the national college, said: "By introducing a recognised quality forprofessional best practice, we are helping to introduceconsistency."
