In Practice: Standards for leaders revealed

A new set of professional standards for children's centre leaders has been unveiled.

The National College for School Leadership, which developed thestandards, is now seeking views in a public consultation. This followspositive discussions with children's centre leaders and local authorityofficers.

Maggie Farrar, director of Every Child Matters and standards at thecollege, said the standards represented a crucial step towards givingthe early years sector a robust qualification and skills framework.

The standards will set out the key areas of responsibility for centreheads and define the knowledge, professional qualities and skillsneeded.

These are grouped into six key areas including leading learning anddevelopment, managing, and being accountable and responsible.

In particular, they tackle the specific requirements for those leadingintegrated teams and are designed for leaders of multi-agency,multi-disciplinary centres. They complement the standards recentlyproduced for early years professionals.
