The government is considering enshrining Sure Start children's centres in law as part of the Education and Skills Bill.

Were you at the End Child Poverty rally a couple of weeks ago? You bet - shouting out a Keep the Promise message that seems even more pressing as the global economy implodes. That aim has been bolstered by the Prime Minister's announcement that he wants to put the pledge to eradicate child poverty by 2020 into legislation. At the same time, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is consulting on whether to strengthen early years legislation to give Sure Start children's centres in England a clear legal existence. Of course, Sure Start was set up to tackle poverty and inequality by providing integrated support to young children living in the most deprived areas. Since then, Sure Start children's centres have become a national programme.
